Abstract:

XIXth century is a considerable period in the history of the piano art. Academic music is actively enriched with elements of folk music; unique piano schools arise at this time. This article analyzes the piano works by Hungarian-German composer Franz Liszt and Norwegian composer Edward Grieg. The author concludes that composers, based on folk origins, created their works in different ways. Plays by Liszt are characterized by glitter and virtuosity, he significantly expanded the sound palette of the piano. Grieg´s works represent lyrical images. These features require different approaches in the performance of works by two composers.

Keywords: Franz Liszt, Edward Grieg, piano technique, history of the piano art, XIXth century.
